Volunteer Position

Catechist and Youth Leader Recruitment

Our community needs individuals who want to pass on their love for the catholic faith. Individuals who are willing to teach what they know, learn about what they do not and show Christ’s love to those they teach. We call these people catechists. Catechists are needed in a variety of categories:

Be a part of RCIA

Have you ever thought about volunteering at the church? We have some great opportunities that can be built around your availability. Come jump into the arena of adult teaching. Our current RCIA team will walk with you on this journey. You can select topics that you either want to learn more about for yourself, you feel passionate about or would just like be a part of a dialogue as it relates to an RCIA topic.  RCIA is scheduled to meet Thursday evenings, starting this September 16 at 7pm. As a catechist you can certainly attend every Thursday we meet or participate as your schedule allows.

Lead a Bible Study or other Adult Learning Module

The words bible study can be a little intimidating but knowing and understanding even the smallest parts of the bible only leads you to want to know and understand more of God’s love letter to us. The amazing thing about leading a bible or any other faith based study is that everyone who participates brings their own unique life experiences and each perspective opens the word of God up even further. As a leader, you do not have to be all knowing, just willing to facilitate and share in discussion. The tools used for these studies can range from a book read as a group, a combination of video and written review, a video and then discussion and so on. Your step into leading a study inspires others to seek a greater understanding than what is provided a weekly mass. Be a leader and see what happens to your faith life. Historically these groups have met on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons.

Youth Ministry

Under this title there are so many opportunities to get involved. You could be a co-leader for a certain age group of kids. You could lead and event or outing that is supported by other leaders or you could be the support to another leader. Your time commitment is determined by you. Our youth ministry has meetings twice a month during the school year and has activities throughout the summer. In a reference book called Handing Down the Faith, a key marker for throughout the book for handing down the faith is role models of the faith.  Even the role models remark that being a role model makes them want to be better in their own practice of faith. Youth are amazing and, in this environment, they are even more because what they know and what they are learning is new to them and it renews it for the leaders. Join us in youth ministry at St. Bernadette, I am sure we have an opportunity that fits your schedule.

Youth Teaching

Teaching students about the sacraments is full renewal of your own sacraments. Do you remember who your confirmation saint was? When was the last time you prayed to them for intercession? Whether you answer yes or no; last week or when I was confirmed does not matter because as you seek to teach these students you renew your own strength with the sacraments, not matter where you are at in this moment. The best part is you inspire the students to grow into an adult who seeks more even after receiving their sacraments. We will be hosting these classes on Sunday mornings twice a month culminating with the 10 am mass. Parents will have a class of their own to attend to help re-enforce this journey for our young people. Can you commit to two Sundays a month?

If yes (to any of the questions above), please contact Michelle Bauer to learn more. michelleb@stbernadettelakewood.org or 303-233-1523
