LITURGICAL MINISTERS If you would like to volunteer for any of these ministries, please contact Karen Graves on extension 17. You must be a registered member of St. Bernadette Parish and training is required for these ministries.
Altar Servers Young people who have already received their First Communion are invited to be altar servers for parish and school Masses, funerals, and weddings. Those interested must attend a required training session. Through training, our altar servers learn to carry the crucifix in procession, carry candles, and when used, carry the incense and thurible. Additionally, our altar servers assist the priest at the altar and aid with other miscellaneous duties as needed by the priest or deacon.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist at Mass At every Mass the Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion have the great privilege of distributing the Body and Blood of Jesus to those who come forward to receive Communion. This is a very prayerful, joyous, and humbling ministry. Those who perform this ministry are quick to tell how their service is a gift that is returned many times over. Eucharistic Ministers must be 18 years of age and fully initiated into the Church with the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Following the required training, the ministers are mandated by the Archbishop upon the recommendation of the pastor. Eucharistic Ministers are then scheduled for their preferred Mass. Schedules are done one month at a time and are published approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of the month.
· Distribution to the Homebound Ministry These volunteers take the Holy Eucharist to parishioners who are ill and/or homebound. They pray with those who are sick or homebound. These Eucharistic Ministers are also mandated by the Archbishop upon completion of mandatory training and on the recommendation of the pastor.
Music Ministry If you have the desire to praise God through song and music, this is the ministry for you! Music is an integral part of our worship. If you are musically talented in either voice or instrument and are willing to attend required rehearsals, please sign up for this ministry by contacting Maryruth Weyand on extension 0 or 10 at the Parish Office.
Lector Lectors proclaim the Word of God in the context of the Mass. Requirements include the ability to read clearly and carefully and you should be comfortable reading in front of a congregation. Training will be provided.
Sacristan Sacristans prepare the sanctuary for the Mass by readying the wine, hosts, chalices and books prior to the celebration of the Mass. The sacristans do an essential behind-the-scenes ministry for our parish.
RESPECT LIFE PROGRAM Those involved with this very important and timely work help promote the Church’s teaching with regard to the sanctity of all human life, especially the unborn. Volunteers for this ministry may be involved in writing letters and/or working with petitions to challenge our elected representatives to defend all human life and promote a culture of life.
USHERS Each Saturday and Sunday we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. Our “ministers of hospitality” are our ushers. They make sure the church is ready for parishioners, take up the collection, and on holidays they may need to facilitate seating. On special holy days, they may hand out palms and candles. If you have the ability to be a gracious host or hostess and make people feel welcome, you should consider this important ministry.
